Black Cat Appreciation Day

Every year on August 17th, cat lovers celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day, dedicated to shedding light on these sleek, velvety felines, dispelling outdated myths, and celebrating the unique joy they bring to our lives. Despite their elegance and sweet nature, black cats often face lower adoption rates in shelters due to lingering superstitions. But anyone who has ever opened their heart to a black kitty knows just how special, playful, and affectionate they truly are.

To mark the occasion, we wanted to share a heartwarming story straight from local Animal Behaviorist  Dr. Caryn (of Ask Dr. Caryn) and her very special black cat, Stimpy, seen above hanging out on the old dock in front of her home in Colonial Beach.

NOTE: As of this writing, there is a small black cat named Buzzy available at King George Animal Shelter!

Meet Stimpy: A Colonial Beach Rescue Story

Stimpy’s journey began right here in Colonial Beach, Virginia, where she was found as a tiny, vulnerable kitten near Riverwood Apartments. Dr. Caryn partnered with the Colonial Beach Humane Society to ensure the little girl got the care she needed—getting her fully vetted, vaccinated, and spayed so she’d be ready for a forever home. Stimpy went to work with Dr. Caryn & Ren daily at Beach Paws Boutique until she was adopted.

It seemed like a happy ending when Stimpy was adopted by a local resident. However, life took an unexpected turn. When her owner moved away and was unable to keep her, Stimpy was returned to Dr. Caryn’s care.

As it turned out, fate had other plans all along. Stimpy had already found her true home—she just didn't know it yet. She has been living happily alongside Dr. Caryn ever since!

The Ultimate Iconic Duo: Ren & Stimpy

When Dr. Caryn decided to name her new rescue Stimpy, it was the final piece of a hilarious, dynamic household pair. She already had Ren, a retired Service Dogs of Virginia dog, and the two could not have been a better match for their animated namesakes.

In an astonishing twist of real-life imitating art, Ren and Stimpy matched the cartoon caricatures of Ren & Stimpy—only with switched personalities! Ren was the loveable canine companion, while Stimpy played the feisty feline counterpart.

Though sweet Ren sadly passed away in July 2025, the bond they shared remains a cherished memory, and Stimpy continues to hold down the fort with her fiesty spirit. Today she is helping raise C. J., the latest Service Dogs of Virginia puppy in Dr. Caryn's care.

Why We Celebrate Black Cats

Stimpy’s story is a beautiful reminder of why days like Black Cat Appreciation Day exist. Whether they're bringing lucky vibes, comedic relief, or cozy lap snuggles, black cats make extraordinary companions. If you are considering adding a new furry friend to your family, consider stopping by your NNK Partners for Pets, the King George Animal Shelter, or the Cat's Cradle to give a loving home to a black cat in need.

Stay tuned to the blog for updates and as always, keep training with love and science!
