Stop the Tug-of-War: A Smarter Way to Walk Your Dog
We’ve all been there—your dog spots a squirrel or a particularly interesting patch of grass, and suddenly your arm is being wrenched from its socket. Our instinct is to pull back, using our "brawn" to win the battle. But what if we used our brains instead?
When we yank the leash, we aren't actually teaching our dogs to walk politely; we’re teaching them that physical force is how we communicate.
3 Simple Shifts for a Better Walk
1. Give a "Heads Up": Instead of jerking the leash when it’s time to move, use your words. A simple "Okay, let’s go!" or a quick whistle invites your dog to join you, turning the walk into a collaborative team effort.
2. Ditch the "Handle" Mentality: It’s easy to grab a collar or harness to move a dog, but this can cause anxiety or defensiveness. Try using cues like "touch" or a happy recall to move your dog without physical force.
3. The "Loose Knot" Challenge: Try walking with a large, loose knot in the middle of your leash. The goal? Keep that knot loose! Use treats, happy tones, and body language to keep your dog engaged with you rather than pulling against the gear.
By shifting from force to communication, you’ll find that your walks become less of a chore and more of a shared adventure with your best friend.
